About the EKU Staff Council

In March 2002, to give EKU’s employees better channels for communication with the administration, President Glasser assembled a steering committee to develop a Staff Council. The committee reviewed similar organizations at several other institutions, and then prepared a set of guidelines and bylaws to meet our own needs. The Board of Regents approved the Staff Council in 2003.

Purpose: To foster communication and serve as a communication conduit between staff and the President, provide recommendations on matters pertaining to staff, and promote the welfare of all staff through professional development and formal recognition while serving the Mission of the University.

Staff Council Membership Representation Table

One representative will be elected from each of the following areas:

Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Business & Tech., and related programs

College of Education, Library

Colleges of Health Sciences and Justice & Safety, DOCJT

Continuing Ed. and Outreach (incl. Extended Campuses), Planetarium

Training Resource Center

Enrollment Management

Financial Affairs, Administration

Student Affairs, Public Safety

ITDS, Media Resources

Maintenance and Skilled Trades (Facilities Services, Housing)

Custodians (Facilities Services, Housing)

Athletics, Development, EKU Foundation, Arlington

Major factors for defining these groups of employees are similarities of job function, work location, camaraderie, program coordination, and the number of staff in each area. Administrative budget codes provide convenient, automated ways to identify membership within these areas.

  • The bylaws for the Staff Council specify that one-third of the seats shall be up for reelection each year, so that four representatives elected in this inaugural election will serve one-year terms, four will serve two-year terms and four will serve for three years. At the recent meeting of the Board of Regents, a double-blind drawing produced the following results that will apply to the current election only:
    • One year terms--Athletics/Development/Arlington; Custodians; Financial Affairs/Administration; Student Affairs/Public Safety.
    • Two year terms--Colleges of A&S and B&T; Continuing Educ. & Outreach/Planetarium; Enrollment Management; Maintenance and Skilled Trades.
    • Three year terms--College of Education/Library; Colleges of Health Sciences and Justice & Safety/DOCJT; ITDS/Media Resources; Training Resource Center.

Eligibility: Exempt and non-exempt employees who are eligible for full benefits as described in the Staff Handbook, who are not members of the Provost Council and/or the Administrative Council, and who are not eligible for election to the Faculty Senate, shall be eligible to serve.

Election process and timeline: Elections will be held annually in November/December. The normal term of office is three years, with one-third of the Council being elected each year. After the 2003 election a random drawing will determine which members will have terms ending after one and two years, to begin the three-year cycle.

Standing Committees: Elections, Issues and Benefits, Staff Recognition and Professional Development, Communications.
